THE DIRECT METHOD

 

CONCEPT

This method is one of the oldest related to language teaching, not just English. The direct method was used during the training of soldiers. 

The direct method of teaching was developed as a response to the Grammar-Translation method. It sought to immerse the learner in the same way as when a first language is learnt.

ADVANTAGES

• There is a focus on speaking and listening. And a useful ‘everyday' language is taught.

DISADVANTAGES

• The students have to guess the grammar rules and the main idea is the repetitive drilling.
